FIRST PRIZE Flavio Michellod

One of the key things we wanted to see when judging this competition was a complete approach. This meant that the presentation and project as a whole was very important.

Flavios project was very professionally presented, and covered every area required of the brief. Many of the judges were impressed with his concise and strong research phase, which as well as capturing the intended emotion of his design included details such as colour analysis. Particularly strong however was the range and quality of the ideas shown in his development sketches.

It was Flavios development sketches which particularly caught the imagination of the judges, and contributed greatly to his first place. He was able to show many ideas, and from a range of different views. It is these kind of sketches that many potential employers pay particular attention to, perhaps more attention than even the final renders. In Flavios case this is exactly what happened.

Many of the judges did bring the criticism that that the quality of the final renderings did not match the quality and feeling in the development sketches. Where the development sketches displayed an organic and soft feel strongly reminiscent of Black and Decker tools , the final renders became stiff and angular. It was his development sketches that helped lift Flavios project to first place. Within these sketches many judges saw a lot of potential, and felt that only a little work would improve his final rendering skills

The technical aspect of Flavios design also showed new ways of thinking, with particular thought being given to modularity. Although there were obvious references to the the GM Hy-wire/AUTOnomy idea, with a singular unit for the drivetrain and power control systems, this modularity is an important part of truck design as there can be thousands of options available to the customer.

All of the judges wish you well in your future design career, and hope that the prizes (Folio feedback from Kristofer Hansen, Equipment from Letraset, a feature in Commercial Motor magazine and a signed hard back copy of Design Sketching) help you on your journey.

Congratulations to Flavio Michellod!
