SECOND PRIZE Nicholas Bormann

Nicholas presented a design that tackled an issue close to the hearts of many truck operators...how to increase load capacity.  His project also displayed a strong knowledge of trucks, and was one of the most mature concepts we received.

It was felt that his concept presented the most realistic, yet still exciting, concept for the future of trucking. Offering not only in fact increased load capacity, but also a fresh way to tackle the problem of separating the living, versus working, aspect of a long haul truck. By physically separating the two areas, he created the possibility to offer the driver a relaxing living space yet purposeful driving environment.

His presentation style was also appreciated with the design concept being clearly displayed. This is especially important when you are trying to convey the functional aspects of your design. His use of 3D images helped convey clearly the concept.

The concept he presented was so well received in fact that we did consider placing Nicholas in first place. In the end however it was felt that the styling aspect of the design was not up to the same high standard as the concept itself. By downplaying the styling aspect the judges felt that Nicholas had missed an opportunity to visually display the merits of his design.

Whilst a truck is ultimately a tool, it is also in effect the one of the first points of contact people have with a haulage company. The opportunity to use aesthetics to make this a positive experience is therefore important. It can also not be forgotten that the visual sense is the strongest sense we have, and therefore contributes a lot to our perception of a tools fitness for purpose.

It was also felt that, had Nicholas shown a little more exploration in his development sketches he could have elevated his design to first place.

This aside, Nicholas must be congratulated on a very well put together idea, and one that we are sure would have a lot of truck driver/owners reaching for their check books!

All of the judges wish you well in your future design career, and hope that the prizes (Equipment from Letraset, a feature in Commercial Motor magazine and a signed soft back copy of Design Sketching) help you on your journey.

Congratulations to Nicholas Bormann!
