DesignerTechniques is pleased to announce that our design competition is here.  We hope as many of you as possible take the time to enter, and if the competition is a success we aim to make this a regular element of the site.  The brief is unusual, but is one we hope will appeal to a wide audience, whilst also aiming to show that the creative process is as important as the results it produces.  As a designer you will be expected to produce a wide and varied amount of proposals to any given brief, and be able to explain your thought process to your design director.  The wider a selection of ideas, and the further your creativity reaches, the better chance you have of your design being the one selected for development and hopefully production.

With that in mind, DesignerTechniques wishes you all the best of luck, and we look forward to receiving and judging your entries.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
The competition is open to anybody, regardless of age or work experience.  However, judging will take both these elements into consideration.  DesignerTechniques would also like to point out that we particularly encourage entries from those of you studying, or aiming to study car design.

THE BRIEF
Instead of giving a full scenario which you must design a vehicle around, we have chosen seven key words, from which you may choose any three.  So long as your design is then based around these three words, the vehicle can take any form or function you wish.  You must bear in mind however that creative and unusual thinking will play the key role in judging the winner of this competition.  For example, merely designing a sports car around the word SPORTS will not be enough.  You must find an unusual and innovative way to apply this word.  Think what the word means in areas outside of car design for example.  We suggest that once you have chosen your three keywords, spend time brainstorming, and building your own scenario.  By understanding the full scenario of your vehicle yourself, you will be better placed to convince the judges.  The keywords you may choose from are,

COMMUNICATION        SPORTS        FAMILY        MTV        NATURE        CLOTHING        TECHNOLOGY

SUBMISSIONS
Three JPEG images no larger than 2000x1400 pixels, e-mailed to [email protected]

To reflect the importance of the thought process, two boards of your submission must comprise a selection of your sketches and development work.  These must show some of the exploration work you produced before your final design, and must show a wide range of thinking.  Your third board will show your final solution.  There are no restrictions on the type and quantity of views you choose to show, but we recommend that you include at least one front three quarter view.  Remember, these boards must be in JPEG format and may be no larger than 2000 by 1400 pixels in size.  Every submission should also comprise a short written explanation of your design (with chosen keywords) as well as your name, age, contact e-mail, design experience and country (this information should be in plain text, and NOT as a separate attachment as only JPEG images will be opened).

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THIS COMPETITION IS MONDAY JULY 31ST

AWARDS
The top three entrants will have their work showcased on the DesignerTechniques website, along with comments from the design profession judges.  The winning entry will also receive a copy of How to Design cars like a Pro, by Tony Lewin, as well as a 150USD gift voucher for www.dickblick.com art supplies.  This can be used to buy the artist materials of your choice.
