This was one of the most professionally presented entries we received, as
well as rendered to an exceptionally high standard. The idea was very well
thought out, with the package drawing being particularly well executed.
The judges were also impressed by the good use of the inspiration material.
The spirit of the inspiration images could really be felt in the final design,
without having to resort to a literal translation of shapes.
Reading the accompanying text also showed that a great deal of thought had been
put into the actual function and practicalities of the vehicle. In the
words of one of the judges,
"The explanation notations
were very well thought out and seemed very plausible."
The sense of freedom and futurism the design encouraged was also very clear.
The use of dynamic and taught surfaces (something that is important to learn
when aiming to become a automotive designer) aiding this perception. It
was also noted that the design had many interesting details that did not detract
from the overall simplicity of the design.
The use of many different views to describe the work was also a very strong
point in the final presentation. It showed a good understanding of the
complete 3D form, something that is very important when it comes to translating
your sketches into a physical (or CAD) model.
The reason we decided to award a second place to this work however was that we felt
that the ideas themselves lacked just a little of the "wow"..."have
never seen this before" factor present in
Marks work. It was however a very, very hard decision to make.
All of the judges wish you well in your future design career, and hope that the
prizes (a signed soft cover copy of Design Sketching and a 25USD gift voucher
for DickBlick.com art supplies store) help you on your journey.
Congratulations to Hrvoje Beslic!
